| Crowded residence halls spark Schine upgrade
Higher numbers of incoming freshmen have left residence halls with less available space. Members of the Student Association want to fix that.

| Groups cope with earlier Homecoming deadlines
This year's homecoming festivities are earlier than normal, which made advertising more difficult and put homecoming court candidates under pressure, homecoming chairs said. Homecoming events will occur Sept. 18-21, almost a month earlier than the previous year.

| U.S. News & World Report ranks SU 53rd, position slips from last year
In high school guidance offices across the country, prospective college students find the thick report titled "America's Best Colleges." The 2008 publication by U.S. News and World Report released last week, ranks Syracuse University at its 53rd spot - three spaces lower than 2007.

| Members of the Syracuse community and university gather at The Palace Theatre to watch Obama presidential nomination acceptance speech
Denver wasn't the only city where cheering Democrats gathered Thursday evening. Around 400 people from Central New York gathered at Palace Theater on James Street for a Democratic National Convention Watch party, and though two time zones away, they joined in the applause as Sen. Barack Obama accepted the democratic presidential nomination.

| Getting the axe
Marisa Murdock can't take the underwater photography course she signed up for this semester - and it's because she's a student at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. SUNY-ESF announced Aug. 20 that state budget cuts of up to 10 percent forced the college to restrict its students from taking some elective courses through Syracuse University.

| New policy limits student class options: Budget cuts remove popular electives from fall schedules
While students were gearing up to return to campus, some found out they would have one fewer class to worry about. Classes such as Wine and Beer Appreciation and Human Sexuality are no longer available to State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry students - and those already enrolled found out these changes last Wednesday.

| Facebook posts cause some colleges to monitor site
Hasty postings on Facebook have come back to bite college students around the world, raising the question of how Syracuse University uses the social-networking Web site to conduct judicial affairs. Violations making the news at other universities in recent months have ranged from academic dishonesty, to threats of violence and underage drinking.

| Parking employees join union
Syracuse University Parking and Transit Services employees joined the Teamsters Union after a 24-20 vote last Friday at Hendricks Chapel. The decision makes the Teamsters the fourth union to which campus employees belong.

| SU ranked No. 50 by U.S. News
Both schools on the Hill advanced this year in U.S. News and World Report's controversial list of America's Best Colleges. Syracuse University moved up two places to No. 50 and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry jumped from No. 98 to No. 85, respectively, in the 2008 report.
